Google PhD Fellowship Program for Graduate Students 2019.
If you wish to pursue your doctoral studies in computer science or its related field then Google will help you financially through its Google PhD fellowship program for Graduate Students 2019. This award call will also connect you to a Google Research Mentor. Applications are now open in Europe, China, East Asia, Australia, Africa, India, Canada and the United States.
Google’s goal is to organise the world’s information and make it useful as well as accessible universally. Furthermore, maintaining and nurturing strong relations with the academic community is also a top priority at Google. Therefore, in order to recognise high achieving graduate students who have been doing exceptional work in computer science and its relevant fields, Google aims to support them financially through its Google PhD fellowship program for Graduate Students 2019.
The fellowships are available for candidates who represent the future of research in the following study areas:
- Machine Learning
- Human-Computer Interaction
- Computational Neuroscience
- Algorithms, Optimisations and Markets
- Natural Language Processing (also includes Information Retrieval and Extraction)
- Mobile Computing
- Machine Perception, Speech Technology and Computer Vision
- Systems and Networking
- Structured Data and Database Management
- Quantum Computing
- Programming Languages and Software Engineering
- Privacy and Security
Qualified candidates will receive a monetary award. The funds will be awarded directly to the university and will be distributed to cover students’ expenses along with stipend properly. The scholarships are given as an unrestricted gift and Google holds the right not to pay for overhead on unrestricted gifts. Additionally, scholars will also be matched with a Google Research Mentor that is intended to be a valuable resource to the scholars.
Note that there is no employee relationship whatsoever between Google and the scholars as a result of being awarded the fellowship. Students are not subject to intellectual property restrictions either unless they complete an internship at the Company.

- East Asia, China and Australia
Students must be nominated by an eligible institution. Nomination instructions are delivered to the institutions and submissions must be made by an official representative directly. Click here for more details. Invitations will be sent in April 2019 (for Hong Kong, China, South Korea and Japan) and will be closed on May 31, 2019 at 11:59 PM. As for the Fellowship program in Australia, Google will send invitations in March 2019 and qualified students will be notified in June 2019.
- India and Africa
Students are allowed to apply during the application period directly. It opens in November in Africa and in February in India.
